MEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES LATE LEAD AT STERLING
STERLING, Kan. – A four-point lead with under 30 seconds remaining ended with an Avila loss at Sterling on Saturday afternoon, 70-69.
Holding a lead for the majority of the contest, Avila led 65-57 with just over two minutes remaining as Sterling fought back.
Up 68-64 with 25 seconds to go, the Warriors hit a three-pointer to bring the score to within one. The ensuing possession saw Avila break Sterling's full-court press to get to the front court before George Williams III was fouled. Williams missed both shots and Sterling took advantage.
With 0.3 seconds remaining, Julian Smith hit another three-pointer to put Sterling ahead for the first time since early in the second half. Sterling led 70-68.
After a long review by the officials, a technical foul was assessed to Sterling, putting Williams back at the line needing to knock down both free throws to give the Eagles a chance.
Williams missed the front end, but made the second shot. On the inbounds, Avila was unable to get a shot off and left central Kansas with a heartbreaking one-point loss.
Off the bench, Xavier Kahube led Avila in scoring with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Robert Lee III pulled down 10 boards and Williams finished second on the team with 14 points.
Avila will look to end its losing streak with the final two games of the season at home on Wednesday and Saturday. Tipoff on Wednesday versus York is slated for 7:30 PM.
