SIXTEEN EAGLES NAMED DAKTRONICS WINTER SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sixteen Avila student-athletes from all six winter sports have been named to the Daktronics Winter Scholar-Athletes list, the NAIA announced.

Per the NAIA, to qualify as a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete, students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, appear on the eligibility certificate for their sport, and have attended their institution for at least one full year. This year, the list features an impressive number of student-athletes who have met these rigorous standards.

“This is an awesome achievement for our student-athletes,” said Avila Athletics Director Shawn Summe. “They came here to get an opportunity to play their sport but to get their degree is the reason they are in college. To see the success of our student-athletes on the academic side is more rewarding because it means they are on track to graduate and do great things in life."

Men’s wrestling and women’s basketball led the way in the winter for Avila Athletics, with four recipients each:

Men’s Wrestling: Logan Johnson, Joshua Martinez, Sullivan Ruiz and Aleksei Wojtkiewicz.

Women’s Basketball: Cecilia Eddy, Kathleen Stanley, Morgan Wiseman and Marlie Wright.

Women’s Wrestling was right behind with three honorees: Jaclyn Riedinger, Ruby Scarborough and Chloe Taylor.

The bowling programs had four total scholar-athletes:

Men’s Bowling: Colton Cline and Nicolas Garza.

Women’s Bowling: Victoria Leal and Kirsten Zirjacks.

Finally, men’s basketball was represented:

Men’s Basketball: Trynnen Gray.
