KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Avila baseball recorded its first single-day sweep of the 2025 season on Monday, beating Bethany 4-2 and 2-1 at Homefield KCK.
Zach Dillman got the Eagles off to a hot start in the top of the first in game one, blasting a two-run homer, scoring Jack Virden.
Bethany got one back in the third to bring it to 2-1.
Avila's power hitters gave the Eagles some breathing room in the sixth as Ricky Dober hit Avila's second two-run shot of the game – once again scoring Virden.
An inning-opening Swedes home run in the eighth saw Avila hold a two-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth.
Looking to pick up their first conference win of the season, Avila got two quick outs in the ninth. Two walks and an infield single loaded the bases for the top of the Bethany order.
Christian Whiting came on from the bullpen looking to get the final out. After loading the count, he forced Bethany's No. 2 hitter to line out to center to pick up the save and the 4-2 win for Avila.
Joey Reichmuth pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two earned and three hits.
Game two saw fewer runs come around to score, but the basepaths were still busy all afternoon.
Neither team scored in the first five innings and Avila only had one baserunner through four frames.
For the second-straight game, Dillman plated the first two runners, scoring Gio Armas and Landon Vahle on a two-run single in the sixth.
Bethany hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, making it a one-run game entering the final inning.
The Swedes had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Corbin Hamman induced a game-ending groundout to wrap up the second Avila win on the day. Hamman pitched 1.2 innings of shutout baseball to help the Eagles to victory.
Hamman pitched in relief of Antonio Villalobos, who threw 5.1 innings of one-run ball.
Avila continues its four games in three days set with a single game against Saint Mary on Tuesday at 2 PM at The Z.
