MEN’S BASKETBALL WRAPS UP SEASON WITH BACK-TO-BACK WINS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The second season of the Tyler Bredehoeft era at Avila ended on Saturday afternoon at Mabee Fieldhouse with a big 83-71 win over Tabor.
The Eagles finished the season 11-16, seven more wins than the previous season and marking their second-highest win total in the previous 10 years.
Avila honored all eight of its seniors prior to tipoff and converted the emotional ceremony in to a big offensive night, shooting 50 percent for the game. Avila won the game down low, outrebounding Tabor by 20 and outscoring the Bluejays in the paint 54-18. The Eagles scored 16 second-chance points off of 16 offensive rebounds – their highest offensive rebounding total in more than a month.
While Avila played for eight of its seniors, it was juniors Xavier Kahube and Joe Kearney who had the game's biggest performances. Kahube scored 19 points and notched 14 rebounds while Kearney hit two shots from deep en route to 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Kahube (two) and Kearney (three) were big on the defensive end as well with five blocked shots.
Speaking of defense, Avila seniors accounted for all six Eagle steals with George Williams, Jalen Tillery and Jordan Majeed notching two each.
Williams and his senior teammate Jehoiada Goins put up 10 points each while Williams and Robert Lee III led Avila in assists with six and five, respectively.
Nearly tripling their win total from the previous season is a great building block as Bredehoeft and his staff continue building the Avila program. The Eagles won their final two games of the season and had a +24 scoring differential in the team's final three games of the 2024-25 campaign.
