KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila men's soccer fell to Saint Mary on Wednesday afternoon at The Z, 5-1.
The Spires got off to an early lead less than 10 minutes into the contest with a Gustavo Freitas goal. Saint Mary would add two more first-half goals and entered halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Two Saint Mary goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half put the game out of reach for Avila.
However, the Eagles still had quite a bit of fight left in them. In the 72nd minute, on a beautiful pass from Malcolm Goswell, Trent Day scored his first goal of the season, marking the first time all season in which Avila has scored in consecutive games.
In addition to setting up Day's score, Goswell added a team-high three shots on goal on the afternoon.
Despite giving up five goals, Eagles goalkeeper Naguib Nassir stopped 12 shots on the afternoon, a single-game high for him.
Avila falls to 0-7 on the season and will travel to Sterling on Friday afternoon.
