KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In what was their most complete game of the season, Avila men's soccer was unable to get the equalizing goal and dropped a heartbreaker to York in the heat at home on Saturday, 2-1.
A great defensive performance from the Avila back line and goalkeeper Naguib Nassir only allowed one goal on 12 York shots in the first half to keep the score close in the first 45.
The Panthers' opening goal came in a crowded box with the ball pinballing around as it went past Nassir's gloves for the score in the 39th minute.
Avila had quite a few strong shots go off the crossbar or broken up at the last minute as they looked for to join the scoring.
York added 10 more shots against the strong Avila defense in the second half and scored in the 74th minute on a breakaway to go up 2-0.
As they did all afternoon, Avila fought back and held strong. Twenty seconds later off the ensuing kickoff, Sam Kanda scored his first goal of the season to keep Avila's hopes alive.
With 90 seconds remaining, Avila's Alex Roy had a huge opportunity as his potential game-tying shot went off the post for the Eagles' final scoring chance.
York would hang on for the 2-1 victory.
Avila stays home for their next game, hosting Southwestern back at The Z on Wednesday at 2:30.
