KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After holding a 3-0 lead into the 54th minute, Avila men's soccer gave up four goals in the remaining 35 minutes as they fell to Bethel on Saturday, 4-3.
Vincent Escott opened the scoring in the 16th minute off an assist form Malcolm Goswell to give Avila a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Escott was taken down inside the box and buried the ensuing penalty kick past the keeper for his second goal in his final game at The Z.
Escott, the senior from Clearwater, Fla., found Trent Day three minutes later for a score to give Avila a 3-0 lead on Day's second goal of the season.
Escott finished the match with two goals and an assist, his highest scoring game of the season.
From there, Bethel took over. The Threshers answered back in the 62nd minute before scoring three more times in a nine-minute span – including one on a penalty kick of their own – as Avila dropped the heartbreaker, 4-3.
The game was marred by a total of 13 yellow cards in the match in the rain-soaked campus of Avila University.
The Eagles will wrap up their season on Sunday night, November 3, as they will travel to face Division-I foe UMKC at 7:30 PM.
