Eric Mateo begins his second season as Head Coach and third overall with the Avila men's wrestling program in 2024-25.

Mateo's first season in charge was highlighted by the outstanding season from senior Daryus Webb.

Webb earned his second-straight appearance in the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship in 2024, finishing sixth at 184, making Webb the first All-American in program history. Webb also finished the regular season ranked No. 15 in the NAIA. Webb's final accolade of the season saw him named Avila Athletics Male Athlete of the Year.

In total, Mateo coached Avila's first three NAIA Tournament national qualifiers and the program's first-ever All-American. In Mateo's first year at the helm, the Eagles' wrestling program had a 3.37 team GPA.

Mateo was elevated to head coach at Avila after spending one season as the program's assistant coach, where Avila had two conference champions and three national qualifiers.

Prior to coming to Avila, Mateo was an assistant at Olathe South (Kan.) High School from 2016-21.

Mateo wrestled collegiately at Central Missouri, where he qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship as a sophomore in 2013. Mateo was a standout wrestler at Waynesville (Mo.) High School, winning the Missouri Class Four state championship and taking fourth at Greco Junior Nationals in 2010.
