XC: Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship Preview
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The opportunity to compete for a national championship arrives this Saturday, November 4 at the 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at the Baldwin City Golf Course in Baldwin City, Kan.
Avila sophomore Penny Fenn will look to qualify for a second straight year on the women's side, while the Eagles also have multiple runners on the men's and women's side that stand a good chance of qualifying. Fenn became the first Eagle in program history to qualify and compete at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships a season ago.
The meet serves as a qualifying event for the 38th Annual NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championship and the 62nd Annual NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship, November 18 at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, Wash. The top two men's and women's team finishers will claim and automatic spot in the field, while the top six finishers on non-qualifying teams who finish in the top 20 of the field will also earn at-large berths.
On the conference level, the top 10 finishers will earn All-Conference honors, while the next five finishers will be named All-Heart honorable mention.
The festivities for the event will begin with opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m., followed by the women's race at 11:00 a.m. The men's race concludes the event at approximately 11:45 a.m.
In total, 11 student-athletes will be competing for the Eagles on Saturday, five women and six men. Saturday will be the final race for the Eagles as members of the Heart as the university will transition into the KCAC in the Summer of 2018 as full members.
