Park-Gilbert (AZ)
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Avila softball traveled all the way to Arizona to take two from Park-Gilbert on Saturday on the campus of Arizona Christian University. The Eagles won the first game, 4-1 and followed it up with a 3-1 win in game number two.
In game one, Avila scored in the first and last innings of the game to secure the victory. Avila was propelled by six shutout innings from Deja Gardenhire in the circle as the junior from Topeka only allowed three hits.
In the top of the first at the plate, Julia Douglass scampered to third on a triple as the second batter of the game and Stephanie Hayes brought her in with a sac fly to give Avila a quick 1-0 lead.
Avila had just one baserunner per inning in each of the next four frames, but would add three more in the top of the seventh to lock up the win.
As if her dominance on the mound wasn't enough, Gardenhire led off the seventh with a base knock to right. Ka'Zem Wood would bring her home two batters later before Douglass recorded her second three-bagger of the game, scoring Wood and eventually herself thanks to an error on the Park shortstop.
The Eagles held on in the bottom of the inning to secure the 4-1 victory.
In the nightcap, Avila used more stellar pitching and three well-timed runs to sweep the first two games of the weekend.
Mackenzie Daniels threw a complete game four-hitter, holding Park to just one run for the final 19 outs of the game.
Just like the first game, Hayes and Douglass teamed up to score the first run of the game. Douglass reached first on an error moments before Hayes belted a triple of her own to score Douglass.
In the second, Laila Rueda recorded an RBI knock to score Jordy Pollo.
2-1 Avila.
The last of the scoring would come with two outs in the third when Douglass crossed home plate for the fourth time in the day off of a Gardenhire sac fly.
The three runs scored were all the Eagles would need, locking up a 3-1 victory.
Avila plays two more on Sunday on the campus of Arizona Christian versus Hope International, beginning at 1 PM CT.
