SOFTBALL’S WINNING STREAK STOPS AT NINE WITH LOSSES AT STERLING

STERLING, Kan. – Avila softball's nine-game winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon at Sterling with 5-4 and 8-1 losses.

Sterling scored early in game number one, putting up four in the bottom of the first. Avila put a strong comeback together in the later innings, beginning with a three-run fourth inning.

A two-RBI single from Myra Megli followed by an RBI double from Abi Beaman brought Avila to within one.

Sterling answered back immediately, putting up another run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-3.

The Eagles would fight back once more, adding a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, but it wouldn't be enough as the Warriors came away with a 5-4 victory.

Sterling got a more decisive win in the second game of the doubleheader, thanks to a five-run fifth inning.

The Warriors put up two in the first and one more in the third inning before scoring five on three-straight batters in the fifth, thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a single and a two-RBI double.

Avila's lone run in the second game came on an Abi Beaman double in the fourth inning.

The Eagles would not put up enough offense and fell 8-1.

Avila will look to get back in the win column with a doubleheader at Ottawa on Tuesday. The Eagles return to The Z on Saturday for a doubleheader against McPherson.
