SOFTBALL SWEEPS BETHANY IN FINAL GAME AT THE Z
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila softball's catchers came through at the plate on Wednesday, helping the Eagles earn two wins over Bethany, 7-2 and 5-1.
In what was technically a home game for the Swedes that was moved to The Z, Avila would bat first in both games and never trail throughout the 14 innings played.
Game one saw Avila score six runs in the first four innings to take control of the game.
Abi Beaman opened the scoring with a sac fly, which was followed up by Stephanie Hayes scoring on a wild pitch to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead. In the second, Ka'Zem Wood smacked an RBI single to center before catcher Myra Megli picked up her first RBI on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
In the fourth, Emily Branson and Hayes would each record RBIs to give Avila a 6-0 lead before Bethany got one back in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Swedes would add one more in the fifth to finalize their only offense of the game.
More dominant pitching from McKayla Cotton was shown in game one, as she tossed five innings, allowing just two runs and striking out five. Aarilynn Richardson came on in relief to throw two innings while allowing just two hits.
Avila's final run of the game came on an RBI single from Megli in the seventh to give her two on the day and help seal the 7-2 victory.
Game two was much of the same for Avila as the Eagles got more production from the catching position and dominant pitching from Mackenzie Daniels.
Daniels threw a complete game three-hitter, allowing just one run in the process and striking out six Bethany batters.
Avila's offense came alive on sacrifice RBIs in the second and third inning from Julia Douglass and Wood before Sophia Media blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to increase the production from Avila's catchers on the day.
Wood picked up Avila's fifth run a few batters after Medina's home run for her second RBI of the game and third of the day.
The Swedes added one run with two outs in the seventh inning to get on the scoreboard before Avila finalized the 5-1 victory.
Avila is one win away from their third-straight 30-win season and will play two games at Missouri Baptist on Saturday beginning at 12 PM.
