LINDSBORG, Kan. – A tough third quarter hindered Avila women's basketball's ability to pick up their first win of the 2024-25 season as the Eagles fell at Bethany on Saturday afternoon, 69-62.
The Eagles entered halftime holding a slim one-point lead over the Swedes, but a 20-8 Bethany third quarter doomed Avila in the end.
The first half saw the Eagles put up a great fight, holding a 33-32 lead entering halftime, highlighted by 50 percent shooting from the field.
Avila couldn't get anything to fall coming out of the break, as the Eagles shot just 25 percent in the third quarter, compared to 60 percent shooting from the Swedes to put a bit of cushion between the two teams.
The Eagles entered the third quarter trailing by 11.
Avila fought back valiantly in the fourth quarter, outscoring Bethany by four in the final frame.
In total, Avila's defense put up a solid afternoon, forcing 21 Bethany turnovers, which were converted into 22 Eagles points.
Marlie Wright once again led Avila in scoring, putting up 15 points. She was joined by 14 points from Hannah Smith – including four three-pointers made – and 10 points and six rebounds off the bench from Eireon Adams.
Wright added five rebounds, four assists and five steals to her effort.
The Eagles are back in action at Evangel on Wednesday night. Tipoff from Springfield, Mo., is slated for 5:30 PM. Avila returns home on November 23 for their home opener against Sterling at 1 PM.
