SLOW FIRST HALF DOOMS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AT SOUTHWESTERN

WINFIELD, Kan. – A cold-shooting ballgame against KCAC-rival Southwestern doomed Avila women's basketball on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles fell to the Moundbuilders, 56-48.

Avila got off to a rough start in the first half, going 0-6 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes and knocking down just 8-of-35 shots from the field. The Eagles entered the half trailing 28-17.

In the third quarter, Avila was able to knock down three shots from three-point range, but an overall poor shooting performance hindered the Eagles ability to get anything going in the contest.

Madilyn Melton (13) and Marlie Wright (10) – Avila's leading scorers throughout the season – were the only two Eagles in double-figures on Saturday. Melton added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Off the bench, Anastasia Wright pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds.

The Eagles will look to snap their two-game losing streak as they return to Mabee Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan at 5:30 PM.
