LATE-GAME COMEBACK PROPELLS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO VICTORY OVER YORK

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Down by five with 50 seconds remaining, it appeared that Avila was about to extend its losing streak to five games, but the Eagles ended the game on a 13-3 run to beat York, 75-70 at Mabee Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

Trailing 67-62 with less than a minute remaining in regulation, Avila used an immediate three-pointer by Kathleen Stanley to cut the lead to two. From there, York missed a pair of free throws before Madilyn Melton hit four-straight foul shots thanks to a technical foul called on York's head coach. Once down by five, Avila turned that into a two-point lead in 22 seconds.

Marlie Wright hit two more free throws after a York foul, Melton knocked down another two before the Panthers hit a garbage time three-pointer. Melton hit two more free throws with less than a second left to help Avila finish the game on a 13-3 run in the fantastic come-from-behind victory.

In the final 50 seconds of the game, Avila went 10-10 from the free throw line to snap its losing streak.

Marlie Wright's streak of seven-straight games with three or more steals came to an end, but she still played a large role on the defensive end, blocking three shots and picking up a steal in the win. Wright also led the team with 19 points.

Kathleen Stanley led the Eagles from long-range, going 3-for-5 from three-point range for 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Starting in place of Melton was Morgan Wiseman, who stepped up when her number was called, putting up four points, pulling down a pair of rebounds and notching a steal.

Avila hit 15-of-17 shots from the free throw line for the game and the defense forced 14 York turnovers. The game may have been won off the bench, with Avila's reserves outscoring York's 32-13.

Avila will wrap up its season with senior day on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM versus Tabor at Mabee Fieldhouse.
