KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In their annual Pink Out game, Avila women's soccer took a tough draw at home to York on Saturday on a steamy afternoon at The Z, 1-1.
In the opening half, York had two huge opportunities that they did not capitalize on. Eighteen minutes in, the Panthers' Sofia Villa Monterd had a wide-open breakaway chance, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
With less than 10 minutes remaining until halftime, Avery Heins had another huge opportunity for York, but her shot attempt flew wide.
The teams entered halftime scoreless.
Eight minutes into the second half is where Avila's offense had its first opportunity. Off a long-distance opportunity and a perfect pass from Joselyn Clark, Mia Yerian had what may be Avila's prettiest goal of the season. The senior curled her shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out to take a quick 1-0 lead. It was Yerian's second goal of the campaign.
Both teams had several second-half scoring opportunities wiped out by offsides calls or saves from the opposing goalkeeper in the ensuing 35-plus minutes.
As the game was headed for another Avila win, York's Laia Gallego Balado put the ball in the back of the net in the 76th minute.
With less than eight minutes remaining, York had one last opportunity but weren't able to score, with Zippora Nigg's header hitting off the crossbar.
Avila's stalwart goalkeeper, Kenan Ebel, made seven big saves on the afternoon to keep the score level throughout the 90 minutes and preserve another Eagles unbeaten performance.
Avila sits at 6-2-3 (3-1-2 KCAC) on the season and will stay home for their next match on Wednesday at noon versus Southwestern.
