AVILA TENNIS OPENS FIRST SEASON WITH BIG WIN
LAWRENCE, Kan. – With a 14-person team made up entirely of freshmen, the Avila tennis program began its inaugural campaign on Saturday afternoon versus Baker. A 5-2 win by the women's team will go down in the record books as the perfect way to begin a program.
"I am immensely proud, this is a fantastic way to kick off the inaugural season," said Avila head coach Jon Renberger.
While the men lost 7-0 to the Wildcats, the women's program made a statement, winning 5-2, thanks to two student-athletes who won both their singles and doubles matches.
Tia Wilsher and Alaeyah Chleborad, as a doubles team, defeated Clare Langfoss and Jordan Grabast 6-3 before Wilsher took down Langfoss (2-6, 6-1, (11-9)) and Chleborad beat Grabast (7-6(6), 6-1) in their respective singles matches.
Additionally, Kylee Norris and Bella Davies won both their singles and doubles matches via default.
With a point for winning two of the three doubles matches and four singles victories, the women's side left their first official competition with a 5-2 victory.
The teams will have a week off from competition before heading to Nebraska on February 28 and March 1 to take on Hastings and Doane, respectively.
