VOLLEYBALL TAKES FIVE-SET THRILLER OVER SOUTHWESTERN

WINFIELD, Kan. – Continuing where the Avila women's and men's soccer teams left off earlier in the afternoon, the Eagles volleyball program defeated Southwestern on Wednesday night, 3-2 and wrapped up one of the best athletic days in recent Avila history, with all three teams picking up wins over the Moundbuilders.

The two teams alternated wins in sets on Wednesday night, with Avila taking the opening set (25-23), third set (25-22) and the decisive fifth set (16-14).

Continuing her stellar play of late, freshman Payton Hofer led the Eagles with 15 kills on the night, setting a new career high. Daphne Gardner kept up the consistent play that she has shown throughout the season, notching a game-high 33 assists. Additionally, Gardner and Megan Davies each recorded a service ace to help record the Avila victory.

There were 14 lead changes throughout the five sets as Avila recorded its first KCAC victory of the season. Overall, it was the Eagles' first five-set victory of the season.

Avila improved to 7-16 on the season and will look to make it consecutive conference wins on Friday at Mabee Fieldhouse against Kansas Wesleyan at 6 PM.
