SOPHIA GIORGIO NAMED KCAC VOLLEYBALL DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After playing an integral role in Avila's come-from-behind, five-set win over Bethany on Friday night at Mabee Fieldhouse, Avila sophomore libero Sophia Giorgio has been named the KCAC's Volleyball Defender of the Week, the conference announced today.
"Sophia has been working really hard all season on continuing to grow as a libero," said Avila head coach Marylyn Mozena. "With this being the first season she is wearing that jersey, it is really awesome to see her hard work paying off with an honor like this; she has definitely been putting in the work."
Giorgio was one of the top performers in Friday's match versus the Swedes, tallying 32 digs – her second-highest total of the season – and added seven assists to her effort as well.
In two matches this week, the sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., played in eight sets, recording 13 assists, two service aces, and 53 digs.
She is the first Avila volleyball player to win a KCAC Player of the Week award since Lauren Harrell won Setter of the Week in September 2021.
Giorgio and the Eagles are back on the court this Friday at Mabee Fieldhouse as they take on Tabor at 7 PM.
