VOLLEYBALL SPLITS DAY ONE OF LABOR DAY TOURNAMENT

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – Avila volleyball made it two consecutive victories with an opening match win at the 2024 College of the Ozarks Labor Day Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo on Friday afternoon, taking down the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 3-1.

Avila controlled the first two sets of the first match, winning 25-18 and 25-12 before S&A took a closely-contested third set. The Eagles came back to seal the match with a 25-17 fourth set win thanks in part to a five-point run after S&A took an early 6-3 lead. From there, Avila would not look back.

The Eagles had double-digit kills in the first and fourth sets and were led on the offensive end by Megan Davies (11 kills) and Daphne Gardner (33 assists).

Avila dropped the second match of the day 3-0 to the hosts.

College of the Ozarks denied Avila's quest for three-straight wins by taking the nightcap in straight sets, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-22.

The Eagles hit .143 in the second match, compared to CoO's .312. Avila finished with five services aces – including three from Maddie Jones – to CoO's three.

Avila volleyball (2-6) returns for two more matches tomorrow in the final day of the tournament. They begin play by facing Mid-America Christian at 2 PM followed by Stephens at 4 PM.
