BELLEVUE, Neb. – Avila volleyball picked up its first set of the season in their opening match of the Bellevue Tournament in Bellevue, Neb., on Friday before falling to the College of St. Mary, 3-1.
The Eagles won their first set in the morning match, 26-24. A back-and-forth set from the opening serve, with CSM leading 13-7 and 16-11 before Avila came back to ultimately take the set with the help of a set-sealing Megan Davies kill.
Davies and Sophia Giorgio combined for 24 kills in the match and sophomore Daphne Gardner led the Eagles, hitting .471.
In their second match of the day, the Eagles fell to Lindsey Wilson, 3-0. After a tight first set in which Avila fell 25-23, Lindsey Wilson took the final two sets, 25-17 and 25-19.
Midway through the first set, Avila went on a five-point run, highlighted by consecutive kills from Davies and Makinley Scholl following by back-to-back service aces.
Davies and Giorgio again helped the Eagles in the second match, adding 17 combined digs to their effort.
Avila hits the court again tomorrow, with two more matches at the GoSarpy.com Classic just outside of Omaha. Play begins for the Eagles at 9 AM against Dickinson State, with the second match beginning at 11:30 AM against Doane.
